Gwyn's Introduction

I have been a private tutor of English since 1990. I work primarily with children and teenagers, one on one or in groups of two, teaching them grammar, writing, vocabulary, and reading comprehension, as well as helping them with their homework and preparation for the verbal and writing sections of standardized tests. It is typical that I start with a student who is in elementary school and continue to tutor him or her until the middle of his or her senior year of high school. Thus, I have built many long lasting relationships with students, seeing them through a series of phases. The opportunity to get to know students over a period of years is very rewarding. However, as a result, I have low turnover among my students and cannot possibly teach all those who have asked me. Reaching more students whom I cannot individually tutor is what led to my developing English Matters’ teaching materials, using systems I have found to work with my students, such as the grammar flashcards. I have reduced the basic rules of grammar to 150 crossed-referenced cards, so that studying is less overwhelming. Knowing what is on Gwyn's Grammar Flashcards™ should give students a solid foundation for writing better and recognizing incorrect grammar on standardized tests.

Gwyn is a graduate of N.Y.U. and studied writing at UCLA. She teaches English and ESL privately and ESL for L’Alliance Française.

Full Testimonials

"I have yet to come across a teacher as capable and as wholeheartedly dedicated to her students as Gwyn. She instilled in me a passion for the English language and an appreciation for impeccable diction and syntax. I am currently an editor for several undergraduate research journals and still find myself referring to her grammar flashcards when making corrections. Anyone would be lucky to learn from Gwyn and I will be forever grateful for the hand she had in my eductation."

"Gwyn’s method of teaching the English language pushes her students to master the language and to gain a solid understanding of English grammar. Gwyn was instrumental in helping me receive high marks on my standardized tests and AP exams, but I discovered that once I left high school, I truly appreciated my years of tutoring with Gwyn. By teaching me proper English, Gwyn equipped me with the tools that are necessary to excel in college and in any post-academic career."

- Mikyung Shim, Yale University

"My first lesson with Gwyn was in my elementary years, and I remember my first assignment was to write a story about who I was. Years later came my final assignment with Gwyn: my first assignment, except it was disguised as the ominous 'personal statement.' Years of learning with Gwyn had prepared me more than enough. I was armed with her method that taught me to dominate English grammar, the styles of writing observed in classic novels and stories that we analyzed in class, my imagination inspired by those books, delectable vocabulary, my own fantastical stories that Gwyn encouraged me to write, an understanding about news, the world, and opinion, and the beauty she helped me see in print. Gwyn is the reason I appreciate the English language and culture so much more. When I reached the final assignment, she became my confidante: a teacher, friend, and critical eye who helped me succeed through our weekly adventures in English."

- Julie Ma, Northwestern
